sinfonia ViVA
About the Orchestra

sinfonia ViVA was founded in 1982 and, as a national Orchestra based in the East Midlands, provides classical concerts and outreach activities that make live orchestral music accessible to all.
sinfonia ViVA has gained national recognition for its integrated approach to concert giving, outreach and audience development, performing in a wide range of venues, from established concert halls to leisure centres. The Orchestra participates regularly in the main concert series of the region and has a busy schedule of outdoor summer concerts. Smaller chamber groups from within the Orchestra provide access to classical music for many communities in more rural areas.
sinfonia ViVA runs an innovative and diverse education and outreach programme, with new works often being 'devised' by local people working with specialist composers and ViVA musicians.
sinfonia ViVA is first and foremost a classical chamber orchestra that has evolved into a music-making Company of quality, diversity and energy. Imagination and flexibility within all its activities make the Orchestra vibrant and relevant as :
- sinfonia ViVA: performing music from over four hundred years as well as newly commissioned works for chamber orchestra
- chamber ViVA: music-making in combinations from duos to octets
- education ViVA: working in, with and for the community
- work ViVA: addressing management and training issues in the workplace through music
In August 2004, ViVA performed two concerts in Berlin's Konzerthaus, its first performances outside England, in a tour supported by McKinsey & Company Incorporated. ViVA broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 where it made its debut in 2004. In June 2005 ViVA undertook a tour in Ireland with concerts in Limerick and in Cork, the latter as part of the Cork 2005: European Capital of Culture programme. ViVA made its television recording debut in August 2005 as part of a project for Granada TV.
2008 marks the start of an exciting period of artistic activity spearheaded by imaginative Principal Conductor André de Ridder, consolidating the Orchestra's position as a leader in the music world at the beginning of the 21st century. In 2009 ViVA will feature in an Indian music festival in London's new King’s Place, building on its partnership with top Indian classical violinist Kala Ramnath.
