July 23 2009

Connected to Music - The Grange School

sinfonia ViVA, the Derby-based regional orchestra has gained national recognition for its partnership work in the East Midlands.

The partnership which includes ViVA and Orchestras Live, Northampton Music and Performing Arts Service, Learning Achievement and School Improvement Services, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal & Derngate Theatre is one of just five music-making projects that have been awarded £192,000 from the Government's Department of Children, Schools and Families for a Music Partnership Project in Northamptonshire over the next year.

The Orchestra will be involved in developing a pilot programme for inspiring local school teachers and their pupils to enjoy and learn music with activity ranging from classroom workshops to full scale public performances.

Peter Helps, Chief Executive of ViVA explained: "The Orchestra's unique and all-embracing approach to working in schools and local communities has long since been hailed as a national model of good practice and it is wonderful that our partnership work in Northamptonshire has gained Government approval through this funding."

"We work with thousands of young people throughout the East Midlands every year – inspiring them to develop their musical talents and creativity and giving them the opportunity to perform on stage alongside professional musicians."

"During this project, we will be working with other organisations to empower music teachers to inspire young people to achieve the highest possible standard and fulfil their potential. This further cements our growing reputation as a national orchestra based in the East Midlands."
